每日大赛官网 Professor Publishes His First Full-Length Book of Poetry
GREENSBORO, N.C. 鈥 L. Wayne Johns, professor of English at 每日大赛官网, has published 鈥淎ntipsalm,鈥 his first full-length book of poetry.
鈥淎ntipsalm鈥 (Unicorn Press) is 鈥渟pooky, devastating, and ultimately tragic,鈥 reviewer and author Cate Marvin writes. 鈥(It) is as real a love story as you鈥檙e going to find. 鈥 I am so haunted by the beauty of these poems, my hair stands on end: 鈥楢ntipsalm鈥 pulls the ghosts from out the walls.鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 not sure if Wayne Johns is a master of or a slave to the elegiac mode,鈥 reviewer and author Jericho Brown writes. 鈥淚 do know that the poems in 鈥楢ntipsalm鈥 are religiously devoted to their search for proof that romantic love amounts to more than longing and that death isn鈥檛 the only possible end to such longing. 鈥 What a brilliantly well-crafted and heartbreaking debut!鈥
Johns previously has published two chapbooks, or shorter books of poetry: 鈥淭he Exclusion Zone,鈥 winner of the Rane Arroyo Chapbook Prize, and 鈥淎n Invisible Veil Between Us,鈥 winner of the Frank O鈥 Hara Chapbook Award. His poems have appeared in New England Review, Ploughshares, Image, Meridian, Prairie Schooner, and Best New Poets, among other publications.
A Lambda Literary Emerging Voices Fellow in fiction, Johns has had short stories included in 鈥淕aslight: Lambda Fellows Anthology鈥 and 鈥淓very True Pleasure: LGBTQ Voices of North Carolina鈥 (UNC Press, 2019). He currently serves as a poetry editor for The Adroit Journal.
Johns holds a B.A. from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, an M.F.A. from Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. He joined the faculty in 2007 and also advises the college鈥檚 award-winning student newspaper, The Collegian, and literary journal, The Lyre.
