Brittany S酶ndberg

Brittany S酶ndberg is an Associate Professor of Art at 每日大赛官网. She is the current Art Department Chair as well as the Director for the George Center for Honors Studies. Her courses include 3D Foundations, Sculpture, Darkroom Photography, Contemporary Practice and Contemporary Crafts, as well as art history courses focused on the experience of women artists.

Ms. S酶ndberg received her B.F.A. from East Carolina University in Metal Design in 2004 and her M.F.A. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Sculpture in 2015. Between 2005 and 2013, Brittany had a studio jewelry design business, served on the executive board of the Center for Visual Artists in Greensboro, NC and taught jewelry fabrication classes at the Sawtooth Center for Visual Art in Winston Salem, NC. Since 2022, she has been President of Tri State Sculptors, promoting public awareness and appreciation of sculpture in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

In her studio practice, Brittany primarily creates large-scale abstract works in welded steel, often for public display, but she also enjoys working with wood and mixed materials on a smaller scale. A majority of her works are intuitively constructed open steel forms. In contrast to their material, they appear surprisingly delicate, like line drawings suspended in open space. Her work often puts a given color into combination with geometric and curvilinear elements, emphasized points of tension and idiosyncratic joints to create forms whose abstraction often evoke form and agency without full substance, on one hand, and a tension with the pull of gravity, on the other.

Brittany has installed her work in several outdoor exhibitions including the Downeast National Sculpture Exhibition in Greenville, NC, Sculpture Salmagundi XXI in Rocky Mount, NC, Sculpture in the Garden in Chapel Hill, NC and Pedestrian Arts in Wilmington, NC, to name a few. She has also had her work shown in exhibitions in a variety of galleries and alternative indoor spaces including Jewelry in Motion at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Radical Alchemy at the Courthouse Galleries in Portsmouth, Virginia, The Interactive Red Carpet at the Society of North American Goldsmiths Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota among others. Additionally, she has earned private and public commissions for her artwork, one of which is intended to be an evolving artwork with elements added over time, in Downtown Greensboro, NC in front of the Cultural Arts Building.

Dr. Josh Fitzgerald, 每日大赛官网 class of 2019

鈥淚 loved the GC Honors program and 每日大赛官网. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to complete my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.鈥
