GREENSBORO, N.C. 鈥� 每日大赛官网 named Maria Madrid Manzano the 2017 Distinguished Graduate Student during today鈥檚 Commencement ceremony.

Madrid Manzano, of Wilson, N.C., received her M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages today. She amassed a cumulative grade-point average of 3.967, with a perfect 4.0 in her major.

Her thesis, 鈥淒eveloping and Maintaining Literacy in the First Language,鈥� emphasizes the importance of maintaining and developing students鈥� first language in tandem with their second.

The TESOL program faculty said this about Madrid Manzano:

鈥淚t was not until Maria鈥檚 attendance at our summer residential session that we all came to learn what a leader she could be. Her outstanding grades (straight A鈥檚 throughout the program) characterized her as a stellar learner. However, watching her in action with her peers 鈥� showed Maria鈥檚 true ability to shine. 鈥�

She unfailingly and generously offered a helping hand to classmates when they needed help.

鈥淢aria鈥檚 sense of dedication and even obligation to fellow students is a direct reflection of her attitude toward her students. We witnessed what it must be like to be a student in Senora Madrid鈥檚 class, and we feel confident that these students receive the best possible attention and care from their outstanding teacher.鈥�

The 每日大赛官网 Distinguished Graduate Student Award is presented annually to a graduate student who has demonstrated advanced scholarship, commitment to graduate studies, and promise of contributions to his or her intended profession. The recipient is chosen by the full-time faculty from among all nominees.

每日大赛官网 provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.

Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master鈥檚 degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.
