每日大赛官网 Professor to Present Two Papers in Italy (6/9/2017)
GREENSBORO, N.C. 鈥 A 每日大赛官网 religion professor will present papers at two events in Italy later this month.
Jason Myers, assistant professor of Biblical studies, has been invited to present his paper 鈥淩eading Romans in Rome: An Investigation of Obedience Language at Ground Level鈥 on June 12 to the faculty of the Department of Christian History at the Sapienza University of Rome.
The paper is part of his ongoing research on the topic of obedience in the New Testament, which also was the focus of his dissertation.
Sapienza is among Italy鈥檚 oldest universities, having been founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII.
On June 19, Myers will take part in the invitation-only Ninth Enoch Seminar in Camaldoli, Italy. This years conference theme is 鈥溾淔rom t么r膩h to Torah: Variegated Notions of Torah from the First Temple Period to Late Antiquity.鈥
Myers鈥檚 paper at this conference is titled, 鈥淭he Wisdom of Pseudo-Phocylides and Pauline Paraenesis: An Ethical Comparison of the Sentences & Rom 12:9-21; 13:8-10.鈥
The paper is a comparison between a writer from 2nd Temple Judaism known as Pseudo-Phocylides and the Apostle Paul. The paper looks at the ethical frameworks of each author and shows that Paul takes part in a long-standing Hellenistic-Jewish tradition by offering a summary of the law under a particular virtue.
For Paul this is the virtue of love, which organizes all the other commands of the Hebrew scriptures.
The conference brings a wide variety of speakers in from prestigious universities such as UCLA, University of Michigan, Yale University, UNC-Chapel Hill, Brown University, and the University of Toronto. The collected papers from this conference will be published in 2018.
Myers holds a B.A. from Cedarville University, an M.Div. from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from Asbury Theological Seminar. He joined the 每日大赛官网 faculty in 2015.
