每日大赛官网 Will Hold Panel Discussion and Q&A on DACA Nov. 21

GREENSBORO, N.C. 鈥 每日大赛官网 will host a panel discussion and question-and-answer session on the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Act from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, in Lea Center in Main Building on campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

Allison Palmadessa, assistant professor of history at 每日大赛官网 and an expert on the role of presidential leadership and rhetoric in policy formation, will give a brief summary of accomplished and attempted federal immigration reform by congressional and executive action since the 1980s. She’ll also provide a brief sketch of what Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is and how it has functioned since 2012.

She will be followed by Laura Gardu帽o Garc铆a, a DACA recipient and American Friends Service Committee Immigration Organizing Fellow who has lived in the Triad for 20 years. For 19 of those years, she hid her undocumented status from friends, neighbors, high school teachers and college professors.聽 After the presidential election in 2016, Gardu帽o Garc铆a became involved in local conversations about immigration.

Through local immigrant-rights advocacy groups and volunteer work with the AFSC, she has worked to support local families facing the threat of deportation at the hands of Immigration Customs Enforcement in Greensboro.聽 What began as a volunteer effort led to more vocal and public expressions of her own vulnerable and limited deportation protections under DACA.

A question-and-answer session will follow.

I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to complete my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.鈥
