每日大赛官网 Alumni Honor Three of Their Own

GREENSBORO, N.C. 鈥 Three 每日大赛官网 alumni received awards from the college鈥檚 Alumni Association during the college鈥檚 Alumni Awards and Student Investiture Program April 6.

Karen Anzola 鈥86 received the Distinguished Alumni Award. She was honored not only for her service on the Alumni Board, including as president, but also for her volunteer leadership positions at her local United Methodist church and at other churches.

She also was cited for her efforts to raise awareness of and funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and for her more than 30 years of work in the field of developmental disabilities and early-childhood education, including two years as co-director of the National Center for Family/Professional Partnerships.

The Distinguished Alumni Award, established in 1966, recognizes those who have continually served the college in community and religious affairs and have demonstrated outstanding service or accomplishment in their personal or professional lives.

Kevin Eagan 鈥04 received the Alumni Excellence Award. He was cited for his leadership as assistant professor in residence and director of the Cooperative Institute Research Program, the nation鈥檚 largest and longest-running empirical study of higher education in the country. He also is interim managing director of the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles and a Huffington Post contributor.

The Alumni Excellence Award, established in 1990, recognizes alumni who have contributed outstanding service and achievement as humanitarians and/or professionals in their chosen endeavors. Service, commitment, integrity and success are the key factors in making these awards.

Nicholas DeFelice 鈥07 received the Young Alumni Award in recognition of his service and performance as a deputy in the Calvert County (Md.) Sheriff鈥檚 Office. He became the youngest member of that office to be promoted to detective, an honor he earned in just his second year of service.

In 2009 and 2013 he was named Detective of the Year by the Calvert County Sheriff鈥檚 Office. In 2010 the State Attorney鈥檚 Office named him Detective of the Year. In 2009 he was named Officer of the Year by the Optimist Club of Calvert County, and in 2014 he received the Maryland Sheriff鈥檚 Association Deputy of the Year Award for Contributions to Professionalism. In 2017, Nicholas was elected by his colleagues as president of the Fraternal Order of Police for the Calvert County Sheriff鈥檚 Office.

He is an adjunct professor at the College of Southern Maryland and is a guest instructor at the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy. When he has free time, he volunteers as an assistant coach for the Northern High School varsity lacrosse team and travels to area high schools to teach practical skills in law enforcement.

The Young Alumni Award, re-established in 2012, recognizes alumni younger than 35 years of age who have contributed outstanding service and achievement as humanitarians and/or professionals in their chosen endeavor. Service, commitment, integrity and success are the key factors in making these awards.

Dr. Josh Fitzgerald, 每日大赛官网 class of 2019

鈥淚 loved the GC Honors program and 每日大赛官网. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to complete my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.鈥

Dr. Josh Fitzgerald earned his master's from Virginia Tech University (studied astrodynamics) as well as earning an Engineering Mechanics Ph.D. He joined the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX as an Advanced Mission Design Engineer, optimizing trajectories for the Artemis II and III missions to return humans to the moon.
